The 6 Top Qualities of the World’s Greatest Leaders

Want to join the ranks of the world’s best leaders? If so, start acting like one, because the secret to successful leadership often comes down to a few simple habits. Regardless of your age, industry, or level of experience; the following habits of the world’s greatest leaders will help shape you into a better leader too.

Wake Up Early


According to a recent study of leaders at some of the world’s biggest companies, the average leader gets up at around 6:15am each day, so if you want to give your leadership skills a boost, then set your alarm clock a little earlier. Leaders particularly well known for early rising include Apple CEO Tim Cook who gets up at 3:45am; Michelle Obama regularly starts her day at 4:30am; and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey hits the ground running at around 5:00am.

Getting up early not only gives you a head start on your competition, it means having time for important tasks that might otherwise be skipped, such as eating a healthy breakfast, exercising or spending time with loved ones. There’s even been studies that show confidence, motivation and energy are all increased through starting the day off earlier.

If you’re worrying about not getting enough sleep, this isn’t the case at all. Waking earlier does mean you’ll need to go to bed early, yes, but it’s more effective to start your day early, than finish it very late.

Visualise Your Success


The first step towards achieving almost any goal is being able to picture it happening, and not just in a vague ‘hope for the best’ kind of way but actually closing your eyes and picturing exactly what success would look like.

Some people may feel this creates false expectations, but it’s actually the best way to determine the steps it will take to get there in the end. All goals need commitment and work to achieve them, but it’s those that are willing to work the hardest that end up as the next Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg.

While visualisation techniques made their first mainstream appearance in the 1970s, mental imagery exercises have long been used by successful leaders, including Martin Luther King and Steve Jobs. Even the Terminator himself (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has used visualisation throughout his career as an athlete, actor and politician; he says, “What you do is create a vision of who you want to be and then live that picture as if it were already true”.

Work Up a Sweat!


Want to take your leadership qualities to the next level this year? If so start working out, as this is one habit shared by almost all of the world’s most successful leaders.
For example, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour starts each day with an hour of tennis; Tesla visionary Elon Musk stays in shape with regular swimming; while Oprah is well-known for her high intensity daily cardio exercises.

The scientific benefits of exercise have also been well documented, with reports repeatedly finding that 30-45 minutes of daily exercise will boost your energy levels, reduce stress, improve your focus, increase motivation, and enhance your mood.


Never Stop Learning


If you think that you have nothing left to learn, you have a lot to learn about leadership, because great leaders are always looking for a way to learn something new; in fact, John F Kennedy went so far as to say that “leadership and learning are indispensable to each other”.

A recent study found that the average leader spends at least 30 minutes each day on personal development, with one of the most popular approaches being to read, and there is no better example than Bill Gates who is known for reading at least one book a week.

Nobel Prize winning biochemist Linus Pauling described the benefits of continuous learning perfectly when he said “the best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas”. Through learning comes experience and there’s no better way to improve your problem-solving and leadership skills than by already understanding how to solve them in the first place. You can never know enough, but you can know too little.

Continuous learning also comes with a wealth of unexpected benefits, with curiosity having been linked with levels of happiness and even the ability to develop social relationships. It’s also one of the common themes among innovators and entrepreneurs, who continually think outside the box to develop new ideas, methods and solutions.

Don’t Just Set Goals, Find Ways to Achieve Them!

    Career success? Your own home? A brand new Ferrari?

  • Plan how you will achieve them...

    Putting in those extra hours at work? Staying in and saving up? Upskilling with a short course?

  • Success! (Hopefully...)

    Hard work and planning pays off, just wait and see…

We’re all guilty of picturing ourselves being approached for that dream promotion, or climbing up the ranks in our work, but most of us push these thoughts to the side because we try and convince ourselves that they’re not possible.

But what we have to remember, is that those that are already high up in the ranks, in executive and even CEO positions, all thought the same thing once. The only difference is, they persevered to achieve these goals, no matter how improbable they may have seemed at the time. This is one of the greatest leadership qualities shared by the world’s leaders. It’s seeing a goal and working towards it no matter what. While the end goal may seem impossible, the steps you take to get there need to be reasonable.

There’s more to it than just setting the goal of becoming a millionaire and hoping to realise it by winning the lottery. If you want that leadership position or promotion, think long-term and consider what it could really take to get there.

There’s many ways you can do this too, and some of the best examples are of professional athletes and business executives alike, who spend time in self-contemplation to understand what their weaknesses may be, how to fix them and what they need to change in their personal and work lives to achieve their goals.


And Finally… Understand People!


Leaders inspire. They motivate. They energise their team. The world’s greatest leaders are those that continue to leave a legacy even after they’re gone. Steve Jobs is one of the best examples of this. He was a true visionary who is still considered an inspiration to many in the business world. To lead and lead effectively, you need understand people. It’s not just about managing and leading others, it’s also about recognising talent. A leader is often only as good as those they employ and knowing when someone has ability is usually a skill that the world’s best share.


A great example of understanding people from Elon Musk
An email, released by one of Tesla’s employees from the Tesla visionary himself, Elon Musk, showed just how effective emotional intelligence can be. After an accident that left a Tesla employee injured, he sent this email out to all employees, no matter their position. You can read the email here:

  • No words can express how much I care about your safety and wellbeing. It breaks my heart when someone is injured building cars and trying their best to make Tesla successful.
  • Going forward, I’ve asked that every injury be reported directly to me, without exception. I’m meeting with the safety team every week and would like to meet every injured person as soon as they are well, so that I can understand from them exactly what we need to do to make it better. I will then go down to the production line and perform the same task that they perform.
  • This is what all managers at Tesla should do as a matter of course. At Tesla, we lead from the front line, not from some safe and comfortable ivory tower. Managers must always put their team’s safety above their own.

It takes a special type of person to be a great leader and the road to success can certainly be long and winding; however, with the right amount of time, effort and a few good habits, anything is possible.
