For graduates of Southern Cross University, the outcome looks promising. Of those students who graduated from SCU with a postgraduate qualification, 81.9% were able to find full-time employment in the four months after completing their course, however. For students with an undergraduate degree, 68% were able to obtain a full-time job after graduating, which is only marginally less than the national average.
In terms of median salary, postgraduates can expect an average of $85,000 per year, which is considerably higher than the $80,000 national University average. Undergraduates, according to the government QILT survey results, had a median salary of $57,000 which is again higher than the average seen across Universities in Australia.
Study Options
SCU College
Southern Cross University College is a dedicated provider of pathway programs to help students have access to Higher education studies. It’s an excellent resource for new students, with English proficiency courses available to help develop the skills needed to achieve the most during their time at SCU. There’s also undergraduate programs for students who may not have the requirements to access a University course. Courses provided at a Diploma or Advanced Diploma level can allow you to gain credits which can be used towards an undergraduate degree.

Preparing For Success at SCU
Created for domestic students, this program provides a chance for students to develop the skills needed to succeed at University.
It can be accessed via distance education or on campus and is held over a period of 12 weeks.
Qualifying Programs
These programs prepare international students for study in areas that they would otherwise not meet the standards required for entry. They combine English for Academic Purposes courses as well as units of study that form the core of the subjects of business and tourism. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs offer a direct pathway into Bachelor Degree and Master Degree qualifications.
English Language Program
These programs are ideal for international students looking to study at a University level in Australia. These courses cover both General English and English for Academic Purposes to equip students with the skills they need to achieve their best while at Southern Cross University.

Research Centres
Southern Cross University is home to a vibrant and productive research program, which focuses on better understanding issues that face us both domestically and internationally. There’s a strong focus on providing research excellence through areas in environmental science. In the Excellence in Research for Australia 2015 Rankings, 24 of SCU’s research areas were ranked ‘at world standard’ or above. A number of campuses feature state-of-the-art research facilities and centres including;
Centre for Coastal Biogeochemistry Research
This centre is heavily involved in developing research and findings in global change issues relating to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Research is undertaken in rivers, oceans, wetlands and coral reefs to better understand the impact of global issues on the changing natural environment. For students, the centre offers a number of Honours and PhD programs and is always on the lookout for new researchers to contribute
Forest Research Centre
This centre investigates the ecology of forested areas as well as developing sustainable ways that plantations can operate without interfering with the natural environment. Studies in carbon emissions, bioenergy, forest animals and domestication of native trees are all extensively researched by a team of dedicated and experienced postgraduate students and professionals
Southern Cross Geoscience
The Southern Cross Geoscience research facility takes a multi-discipline approach to exploring areas of natural systems. Some of the core strengths and areas of focus by this centre include environmental geochemistry, theoretical geochemistry, archaeogeochemistry and biochemistry. Southern Cross Geoscience has several state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to advance the understanding in this area and ultimately lead to making a difference through the research findings and output
Marine Ecology Research Centre
The Marine Ecology Research Centre is especially focused on coral reef ecology, as well as study on whales and dolphins. Other areas of specialisation include marine chemistry and pollution, fisheries and marine biodiversity. The research centre has many dedicated postgraduate students assisting in developing greater understanding and innovative findings, especially from the Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses
Southern Cross Plant Science
The plant science facility is an extensive research operation focused on the genetics, genomics and phytochemistry of plant life to better the use, production and cultivation of these plants, especially in agriculture and horticulture. Some of the areas that this research can contribute to include human health, nutrition, climate change, sustainability and plant conservation. Like most of the Southern Cross University research facilities, the Southern Cross Plant Science centre provides postgraduate training for students in these relevant fields.
Campuses
Southern Cross University has a number of locations, including the Gold Coast Campus, Lismore Campus and Coffs Harbour Campus. In addition to this, there are also branches in Sydney and Melbourne which run the Hotel School, a joint operation between Southern Cross University and Mulpha Australia which run a number of international business degrees
Lismore Campus
Lismore is a fantastic student city, being only a short distance from the famous Byron Bay region located in North East NSW and not far from the border of Queensland. This town is perfect for anyone wanting to get the most of a relaxed university lifestyle close to all of the resources and facilities of a large town. The campus itself is situated on over 75 hectares of beautiful natural grounds.
There are over 60 courses in undergraduate and postgraduate levels to study at Lismore Campus, in areas such as business, education, environment, science and engineering, health, humanities, Indigenous studies, law, media and arts, tourism and hospitality.
The Learning Centre
This new centre is the home of student’s collaboration and study spaces, with dozens of places to learn, study and create with group members. Forming the heart of the Lismore Campus, the Learning Centre has space for classes and learning as well as socialising. Spilt into three distinct levels with different functions, the centre represents Southern Cross University’s need to provide plenty of space to suit the learning styles of all students. The second floor provides a reading and relaxation area, where students can relax and recharge after a busy day, as well as catch up on key readings for classes or recreationally. The third floor is for quiet study, research and individual work.
Goodman Plaza
Goodman Plaza is the home of all the student facilities and services offered at Lismore. There are many centres available here, which is easily accessible to all students and provides the convenience of having everything in the one place. The Student centre, Career Development Service, UniMentor, Student Association (LEXSA) as well as the Campus Living Office are just some of the services available.
The Deck, SCU UniBar
The deck is the name of Southern Cross University’s campus café and bar at the Lismore Campus. The café is open to students Monday-Friday, and the bar is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night. It’s a popular spot for students to go to unwind, relax and socialise with friends.
SCU Fitness for You
SCU Fit for You is SCU Lismore’s modern fitness centre, which is fully equipped to suit anyone’s fitness and wellbeing goals. Students have access to a heated indoor swimming pool, a gym which is fully equipped with the latest training equipment and machines including boxing, weight lifts and a circuit area, a cardio area as well as a variety of group classes. There are also a number of personal trainers available for individual sessions and bookings.SCU Health Clinic
The Southern Cross University Health Clinic, located at the Lismore Campus, offers quality medical and health services to the community at large. All appointments are either through a professional and qualified health technician, or an experienced student supervised under one of the professionals. It offers a great ability for students in heath fields to gain real- world knowledge and experience on how clinics operate, as well as how to properly manage patients. Services offered include psychology, General Practice, osteology, exercise physiology, dietetics, mental health nurse practitioner and massages.

The Lismore Campus has many different state-of-the-art facilities and resources, especially in the science and health fields. Just a couple of the many different laboratories on offer to students at Southern Cross University Lismore campus include:
Anatomy Cadaver LaboratoryThis world-class laboratory is the only rurally-based lab of its type in Australia. The facilities on offer allow students to get an in-depth understanding of the functioning and performance of human bones, muscles, ligaments as well as various systems and organs in the body. The lab is a great asset to students in physiotherapy and exercise science.
Exercise Science and Biomechanics LaboratoryThe range of exercise science facilities and technologies on offer at Southern Cross University are virtually unparalleled. They include weight rooms, physiology and movement laboratories as well as technologies to better understand biomechanics and neuroscience.
Nursing LaboratoryNursing equipment provided by the numerous nursing laboratories include simulated hospital and clinical environments, with all of the technology that would be found in the real-world setting, as well as training mannequins.
Studio One29
For anyone passionate about music and production, the Southern Cross University campus at Lismore offers a state-of-the-art professional production space which includes a concert and performance stage, a room for live or recorded audio and is equipped with high-quality visual and sound technologies and equipment seen in more music venues and recording studios. It also features an exhibition space which is often used as a gallery to showcase student work across a wide range of mediums.
SCU Village- Lismore Campus Accommodation
SCU Village has a location at the Lismore Campus, where students can make the absolute most of their university experience. There are four residential colleges located at the Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses, through SCU Village
These provide quality room and amenities to suit every student’s needs. Rooms range from 6, 4 and 2-bedroom apartment options, with all including a bathroom. Additionally, there are many features and amenities perfect for making the most of this experience, including a pool, student lounge with theatre and table tennis, outdoor BBQ area, study centre, gym and all within proximity to the variety of facilities on campus.
Coffs Harbour Campus
Coffs Harbour is a coastal city located in the north of NSW. Famous for its beaches and natural beauty, this city is a great location for students to learn, socialise and make the most of this popular and attraction- abundant town. Currently, SCU Coffs Harbour Campus offers courses mainly at the bachelor level, with a few select Master’s Degree courses on offer as well. Subjects which are available to study at the Coffs Harbour Campus include business, education, health, humanities and social sciences as well as tourism and hospitality.
Student Learning Centre
The Coffs Harbour Student Learning Centre is a supported learning environment located at Coffs harbour, which can be used by students to access resources for specialised tasks, such as editing, audio/visual content, scanning and group work tasks and presentations. The Centre has a number of portable equipment for loan as well, including digital cameras, tripods, GoPro, microphones, recording equipment and more. MacPro computers and an interactive whiteboard can also be accessed at the centre.
Laboratories
Like most of the campuses at Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour provides students with access to ultra-modern and up-to-date professional laboratories which contain the technologies and equipment used in real-world settings. Some of these facilities include:
Midwifery Birth Suite
This speciality laboratory offers students with the chance to be involved in a stimulated childbirth experience, which can range from natural births through to dependency births with the use of state-of-the-art technologies. The simulation and interactive mannequins are a vital resource to nursing and midwifery students, as well as the access to the neonatal care unit which facilitates care of newborns after birth.
Psychology labs
These laboratories are available to research students and professionals alike and are often used to conduct research in brain functioning and behaviour. Students can have access to professional psychological technologies such as electroencephalograph (EEG) systems to monitor brain waves, and eye-movement tracker, virtual reality equipment, vision- focused technologies as well as equipment to monitor fine-motor skills.
Sports and Exercise Science
Students have the opportunity to conduct tests in a movement lab in areas of physiology, exercise science, biomechanics and neuroscience. Basic equipment such as bikes and treadmills are available, as well as specialised technologies including motion capture systems, electromyogram (EMG) to monitor muscle movements and an electrocardiograph (ECG) to monitor cardio performance. His facility is perfect for students in sports and exercise science fields.
SCU Student Sports Centre
The Coffs Harbour Student Sports Centre is an affordable, state-of-the-art facility which offers the best of exercise and wellbeing equipment and resources. The centre includes cardio equipment, weights, a court stadium which can be used for a variety of sports as well as social sport activities such as basketball and futsal where students can organise a team and verse others in competition.
Coffs Harbour Education Campus (CHEC)
The Coffs harbour Education Campus is a partnership between Southern Cross University, North Coast TAFE and the Coffs Harbour Senior College to offer a range of facilities, buildings and resources which can be accessed by students enrolled through either provider. All facilities and services on the Coffs Harbour Education Campus are shared including lecture theatres, library, computer centre, specialist facilities for certain subjects–such as nursing, science, hospitality and childcare– as well as sports fields, cafeteria and a bookshop.
National Marine Science Centre
Coffs Harbour is home to the National Marine Science Centre, located adjacent to the Solitary Islands Marine Park on the coast. This renowned centre provides opportunities to produce reputable research and findings and further understanding in areas of marine ecosystems and animal life. This centre is invaluable to students in environmental and science studies, which provides them with the chance to access technologies, equipment and mentoring from professionals otherwise hard to come by.
Coffs Harbour Accommodation
Similarly to the Lismore campus, SCU at Coffs Harbour also boasts a great accommodation facility to students. The SCU Village here has 4 bedroom shared apartments available which are fitted with a kitchenette with appliances, a balcony, internet access, a lounge and dining area, bathroom, study desks and a wardrobe.
Gold Coast Campus
The Gold coast is one of Australia’s most attractive locations and sixth largest city, boasting beautiful beaches, famous sites and a fantastic, laid back lifestyle. This also makes it one of the greatest places to study for students in the country, and the SCU Gold Coast Campus makes this possible.
Locating in Coolangatta, only a few hundred meters from the beach; Southern Cross University provides state-of-the-art facilities, resources and learning opportunities to students. Subjects on offer in this area include business, education, health and human sciences, humanities and social sciences, IT and Law. These subject fields are also available in qualification levels in both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Centre for Teaching and Learning
Southern Cross University’s Centre for Teaching and Learning is a resource centre created to provide support to students in a range of areas. The centre is involved in three areas, Academic Practice, Academic Skills and Digital Resources. The Academic practice portion is used to create strategies to further students’ achievements through staff excellence, including developing ways to better the student experience and allow them to receive the support they need.
Academic Skills
Southern Cross University’s Academic Skills program focuses on providing students with the skill set needed to achieve their very best at University and in the workforce. Staff to help with services in Academic skill development are located at the Lismore, Coffs Harbour and Gold Coast campuses. Some of the services and support they provide include consultations with students, development in numeracy, literacy and critical thinking skills, Peer Assisted Learning Sessions as well as generic skills in assignment creation, referencing and editing.
Southern Cross University Library
Southern Cross University’s Gold coast campus has an extensive library available to students and staff. Specialising in online resources, the centre has thousands of books, eBooks, journals and articles available to assist with assignments and reports of any type. The specialised librarians are a vital resource for students, providing individual support and assistance with help locating specific items, referencing and navigating the database. The library also contains a number of study rooms specialised for group collaboration, as well as individual and quiet study areas so students can always access a place to suit them.
Clinical Skills Laboratories
Southern Cross University specialises in providing facilities and equipment to compliment the learning of students in health and health sciences, as well as engineering, environment and science related industries. Because of this, there are plenty of world-class laboratories available to assist with better understanding these areas and advance knowledge and training essential in career development in the future.
Movement and Manual Therapies
The Movement Lab focuses on the provision of learning and training through the use of equipment and technologies which assist in the understanding of body and muscular movements. This facility is used by students studying Exercise Science, Podiatry, Pedorthics and Biomechanics. Some of the technologies available include state-of-the-art training equipment including a treadmill, pressure mapping systems, motion capturing technologies as well as an EMG and a ECG.
Speech and Language Lab
Created specifically for students in speech pathology studies, this facility provides students with access to equipment such as a sound transmission and phonetic transcription technologies for speech recording, software and programming for speech and voice analysis as well as a number of other devices crucial in gaining real-world experience in these roles.
Sydney Campus
Both the Melbourne and Sydney campuses of Southern Cross University provide a range of courses on offer to International students in the areas of business, accounting and IT through the joint efforts to create the Hotel School with Mulpha Australia. Currently, courses available include:

The Hotel School Sydney
The Hotel School Sydney is a collaboration between Southern Cross University and Mulpha Australia, an influential company in the hospitality industry. Located on Lonsdale Street in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the School–also run through the partnership between Southern Cross University and Mulpha Australia–provides the same quality education in areas of hospitality and tourism as it’s Sydney sister school. Students have the opportunity to learn the operational skills involved in managing a hotel as well as areas of finance, marketing and accommodation practices.
