The Australian Government recently conducted a survey across higher education students and graduates to obtain vital information to help future students compare and analyse different providers across a range of fields. Graduate Information
One very important aspect when determining which provider to undergo a higher education courses through, is seeing how recently graduated students are able to access employment after their university courses has been completed. For RMIT, the survey results determined that 76.9% of recent undergraduates across all subject fields, were satisfied with the education they received, and found that it helped them in being more prepared to enter the work force, with the national average across Australian universities being approximately 82%. For postgraduates, this satisfaction in the survey was 79.8%, with the national average for overall satisfaction in University postgraduate courses being 83%.
In terms of graduate full-time employment, 62.1% of completed undergraduates were able to obtain a full-time job in the four months after completing their degree or courses, with the national average across Australian universities being around 70%. For recent graduates of postgraduate studies, the ability for students to obtain full-time employment was 76.6%, less than the national average across Universities which sits at 83.5%. The median salary for undergraduates was approximately $50, 000 according to survey results, and $68,000 for those that completed a postgraduate study at RMIT.
Study Options
There are many different study options provided by RMIT to assist people, no matter their location, having access to their resources and learning facilities. RMIT has partnered with Open Universities Australia to offer a number of courses online. The online learning aspect of RMIT is one of their main focuses, with 18,000 of RMIT’s entire 82,000 student population undergoing their studies outside of the country through the overseas learning centres, but dependent on RMIT’s wealth of online learning resources. RMIT currently has 18 courses available through Open Universities Australia, across qualification levels ranging from Diplomas to Master’s Degrees. Jobs On Campus
Jobs on Campus aims to ensure that students have the chance to undertake practical work experience to improve their employability, through volunteer positions, industry placements and event coordination, this resource is a valuable asset to anyone wanting to gain experience and practical skills before they graduate.
InPlace
This program aims to co-ordinate both higher education and vocational education student’s engagement between themselves and over 7000 industry partners and alumni. The goal is to help RMIT students connect with potential employers on a personal level, and gain advice and experience tips along the way from professionals.
Job Shop
This drop-in shop resource centre assists with everything from resume reviews, job search advice through to research and placement help. For students who undertake the many courses on offer which have a large work placement aspect, this resource centre is invaluable in assiting with obtaining a work placement.
Mentoring Program
RMIT is very passionate about connecting students with alumni and industry leaders, and offers a cloud- based mentoring program to do so. They also host frequent executive meetings and social events to develop student connections and networking abilities with industry professionals and potential employers.
Global Opportunities
RMIT is a very well- recognised university in the global community, and is continually recongised for it’s ability to create world- class future professionals in its subject fields. This is mainly due to the university’s commitment to providing all students with overseas opportunities. RMIT offers dozens of study exchanges, internships and volunteering options internationally with the 200+ global exchange partners it has. In 2015, over 2000 students took part in these global programs, allowing them to come back with valuable skills and experience which are the key to successful endeavours in the future.
Campuses
RMIT has three campuses in Australia; City campus, Brunswick Campus and Bundoora Campus. All of which, are located in and around Melbourne. Each campus has a unique offering, and comes with a range of state-of-the-art resources and facilities to enhance the student experience. No matter how important the courses are, campus life and the experiences you can have at university are a major part of the decision process, and are vital in creating life-long friendships and memories. Below is a detailed look at what the university offers in terms of its campuses, as well as the different clubs, associations and events available to suit anyone’s interests and passions.
City Campus
RMIT City Campus is without a doubt one of the best in Australia. Currently home to 45,000 students which learn in its various buildings, the city campus is an architectural and social masterpiece. RMIT University Melbourne campus is located right in the heart of the city, spanning both sides of a section of Swanston Street, one of the major roads of the CBD. The city campus is home to several specialised subject fields, including architecture, design, media, communications, engineering, physical science, social science and business. It’s completely accessible via public transport, being only a short walk from Melbourne Central Station and serviced by several tram lines which can take you all around the city.
One of the greatest parts about this RMIT University campus is that it’s imbedded right in the cultural scene of Melbourne, featuring dozens of on- campus cafes, restaurants, galleries and retail outlets and surrounded by some of the busiest culture-filled parts of the city. The Queen Victoria Market is only minutes away, as is Melbourne Central, Burke Street, QV, Emporium and the State Library of Victoria. In terms of it’s architectural design and infrastructure, the city campus is unrivalled in beauty and technology, with most of its major buildings holding a five Green star certified rating, and at the forefront of sustainable design.
RMIT Library
RMIT Library, names the Swanston Street Library, is the most frequently visited building at the Melbourne City Campus, having over two million physical student visits in 2015 alone. It features over half a million books and AV titles, and countless eBooks and virtual resources as well. It’s full equipped with high- quality desktops, laptops, notebooks and iMacs, as well as thousands of student study seats and dozens of group study rooms.
The University has a strong commitment to its information resources, spending over $13 million on its RMIT Library resources in 2014 alone to ensure students have access to only the best books, videos, journals and articles to assist them with their study. Almost one million resource loans were taken out by students too, highlighting how valuable borrowing the library’s millions of books is to students.
Alumni Courtyard and A’Beckett Square
The Alumni Courtyard and surrounds are one of the main social hubs of the campus, and a key component to the RMIT University social scene. A grassed social spot, the Alumni Courtyard is situated in the heart of the Old Melbourne Gaol, surrounded by the bluestone walls of the heritage site and creating a unique, lively place for a number of festivals, events and gatherings throughout the uni calendar.
A’Beckett Square is another main part of the social scene, offering a number of sports and recreational facilities including basketball, volleyball, badminton and futsal courts as well as BBQ facilities, bike and car parking.
RMIT Swanston Academic Building
The Swanston Academic Building is a five-green star design rated building, winning multiple awards in architecture in recognition for its sustainable design. It won the ‘Best Public Building’ award in 2014 from the Property Council of Australia, highlighting the building’s stand-out design and features. It also subsequently won the Australian Institute of the Architects’ Urban Design Award in 2015. It contains over 80 learning and teaching spaces across it’s 12 levels, with computing and projection facilities in all 22 of its project rooms and wall-mounted LCD displays and other resources to make learning interactively easier. Group project study rooms are available year-round for booking. The building is directly accessible by nine different tram routes and a little over 100 meters away from Melbourne Central Station. The Swanston Academic building is home to the RMIT Business School, but often used by all other faculties.
Design Hub
The Design Hub (Building 100) is located on the heritage Carlton & United Breweries site, and was completed in 2012. It provides collaborative spaces across disciplines, especially design and engineering. Research group rooms which are customisable to suit needs, can be used by research groups for months to years at a time. It also contains several exhibition sites and galleries to showcase student’s work and often used in events. One of the main features of this Green star certified building, is that it’s covered in striking glass discs on the exterior, which in the future, may be used to generate energy from the sun and allow the building to completely power itself.
RMIT University’s New Academic Street Project
One of the most exciting parts of the RMIT city campus is the New Academic Street Project, which has been in the works for years and expected to be completed by the end of 2017. It’s aim is to transform the heart of the city campus, creating new facilities, better resources, and more learning and recreational spaces for students. Some of the main elements of the project include:
- Renovation to the Swanston Street library, creating over 1000 new student study spaces, opening the campus and incorporating the natural environment; making it feel like more of an extension of the city.
- Bringing all student services and resource precincts into the one area, allowing accessibility and ease for students
- Opening a mix of food, beverage and retail outlets across the city campus
- New media precinct which will include state of the art TV studios with broadcasting abilities and 4K UHD capabilities
- More gardens and terraces as well as rooftop pavilions to enhance the existing urban environment
- $98 million ‘Sustainable Urban Precincts Program’ to reduce emissions and energy use across campus; leading to a 30,000-tonne reduction in greenhouse gases and water use cut by 68 million litres
Brunswick Campus
The RMIT Brunswick Campus is home to 3000 students in the design field. Located only five kilometres from the city, and easily accessible to the city campus, Brunswick campus offers a uniquely peaceful campus life, with direct access to all the city’s resources. Students undergoing studies in design fields including fashion, textiles, merchandising and product development, have access RMIT’s state-of-the-art design technologies and equipment available to them year- round.
The RMIT Brunswick campus is a short walk from Jewell station on the Upfield train line, and has a number of tram stops surrounding it. It features the Brunswick library, which has a wealthy supply of learning resources to all students, as well as dozens of study spaces for both individual and group use.
Fashion Hub
One of the main aspects of the Brunswick Campus is the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Fashion Hub. This purpose-built structure offers valuable specialist technologies to students in fashion, textile education and research. It has specialist machine rooms, a 3D printer, dozens of computers and a number of display and exhibition areas to showcase student’s work.
RMIT Link and the Student Union provide countless events throughout the year, creating a vibrant and social life for students.
Bundoora Campus
The RMIT Bundoora campus is located in the North- East of Melbourne, 18 kilometres from Melbourne CBD. It’s separated into two campuses, the East and West Bundoora Campus, which fall on either side of Plenty Road. It houses many facilities for the engineering, health, medical sciences and education programs offered by RMIT. It also features the largest of RMIT’s on-campus living.
To facilitate the specialist subject fields the campus accommodate, the RMIT University Bundoora campus includes key facilities such as a purpose- built health and medical science laboratory, an engineering campus which is fitted with state-of-the-art technologies, two libraries, quality sport facilities and a dedicated childcare centre.
Some of the health science clinics it provides cover all areas of Chinese medicine, chiropractic, osteopathy and psychological services.
RMIT UniLodge
The Bundoora campus UniLodge has over 370 beds for students undergoing both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It offers a number of different living arrangements, including studio apartments and shared rooms.
Apartments are fitted with modern facilities, including appliances, fridge/ freezer, microwaves and cook tops. Its competitive rates make it perfect for students looking to live on- campus, with all fully- furnished apartments including electricity, water and high- speed internet in the rent, so ne extra bills occur at the end of the month to add to expenses.
RMIT Sports Centre (Bundoora Netball and Sports Centre)
Not only does Bundoora campus provide outdoor spaces galore, including a heritage walk and local parks, but it specialises in sports facilities. Bundoora is home to RMIT’s Sports Centre (also known as Bundoora Netball and Sports Centre) which houses four full sized courts, a hockey and soccer pitch, athletics track, tennis courts, function room, gym, café, change rooms/ showers/ lockers.
Life on Campus
Clubs are offered in a number of different areas, academic clubs include student groups across most subject fields, from the RMIT Urban Planning Society, RMIT Press Club, through to RMIT Mathematics and Statistics Club and the Law Students Club.

Events
To promote students making the most of their university experience, RMIT provides countless events throughout the year to cater to any and everyone’s needs, and allow friendships to be made and good times to break up the monotonous study routine. Through the university’s numerous associations and its student union, RUSU; every type of event on offer.
RMIT hosts a number of conferences, meet and greets, information and networking events as well as expert lectures every year to help students to develop their networking skills and make vital contacts in their field. These occur across most faculties, especially in business and commerce, and are a great resource for any student.
RUSU Events
RUSU events are something RMIT’s entire population look forward to every year. No matter what even you’re after, the perks of being a part of this organisation far outweigh the lenient $10 sign-up fee. Free breakfasts for members are available every week on all campuses, which make some of those early morning starts that much more bearable.
Another event many students look forward to is the weekly Chill n’ Grills, which provide a free BBQ as well as beer and cider. Again, they occur across campus locations, but the days do vary. RUSU also host boat parties, end of exam parties, market days, national campus band competitions, live music events, nightclub parties, orientation week events, welcome bash, cooking classes and a national DJ competition throughout the year. No matter what you’re studying, or where you are, there’s always something to do.
The Annual Student Ball is one of the most anticipated events of the year, giving everyone who attends the chance to dress up, dance and have fun with friends, while making many more over the course of the night. There’s also student balls across just about every faculty, including the Business ball and Engineering Ball. Even if you aren’t part of the school you can attend!
Sports and Recreation
There really is so much to do at RMIT, and no matter what you’re interested in, ther really is something for everyone. Sport and recreation acivities form a majorpart of uni life, with clubs in just abut every sport on offer as well as many different free classes. Some of those include:

Galleries, funding opportunities for budding artists, student run groups and associations, field trips to galleries and institutes, meet the maker to tour local artists and their works, free workshop and skill- share, performing arts events (emerging student writers, in theatre, short film, poetry and music)
